When to Keep My Child Home
Illness
Sickness is a part of childhood, whether it's a fever, sore throat, cough or just not feeling well. Sometimes even minor illnesses require that your child stay home just to prevent the further spread of contagious disease. Cough and runny nose alone may not prevent your child from attending school unless it is interfering with their sleep or ability to participate in school. Your child needs to be able to "manage" their runny nose in the classroom which means being aware of when they need to get a tissue to wipe it. We practice good hygiene in the classroom, and we use frequent hand washing to help stop the spread of germs. Please reinforce these practices at home. Remember that a child should be "fever free" (100.0 F) without medication for at least 24 hours before returning to school. Also, a child with vomiting or diarrhea should not return to school until they are feeling well, and are able to tolerate a regular diet.
If a child becomes ill during the school day, the parents will be contacted immediately. In compliance with Macomb County health laws, all communicable diseases must be reported to the school. A note is then sent home to parents to advise them of the contagious disease.
Always call your doctor's office for advice if you are not sure about your child's condition or have further questions about whether your child should stay home from school.
