SJA Green Team
The Green Team was organized in 2009 with members from grades 3-8. Our goals are to educate students and staff of ‘environmentally correct practices’. We are involved in a variety of activities. Some students create seasonal bulletin boards, empty classroom recycle bins, and recycle used school paper. Others pick up recycled ink cartridges, discarded cell phones, and batteries from the church drop off boxes; these items are then sorted for recycling.
We have been able to install 20 occupancy sensors in the school, church and Family Youth Center with funds earned from our efforts. Our goal is to have an occupancy sensor in every room of the school.
We have a yearly Electronic Recycling Day where the community can bring old electronics to be properly disposed of. The electronics are taken to a warehouse where they are broken down and hard drives destroyed. The plastic, glass, metal and wiring is then sold to an end user who will reuse the materials to create a new product; thus items made from 'Recycled Materials'. While keeping electronics out of the landfills, we are being good stewards of the Earth.
