Today we will learn how travel between the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan has changed.
You will see that there is a vast difference in the water levels between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. There is a series of waterfalls near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. These waterfalls made it unsafe for ships to travel from the Upper Peninsula to the Lower Peninsula ... The drop was too huge.
Because God provided humans with a most marvelous mind and ability to think, they came up with a solution to the problem: The Soo Locks!
Please read pages 24 and 25 of your textbook about the Mackinac Bridge and the Soo Locks. You will learn how they improved travel between our two peninsulas.
Then, please watch the following video which demonstrates how the Soo Locks work.
