SOCIAL STUDIES
WELCOME TO SOCIAL STUDIES!
Today in Social Studies we will look at the lakes and rivers of Michigan. Living here in the St. Clair Shores area, we are fortunate to have just a short drive to the water. Although we live near Lake St. Clair and enjoy its beauty, it is not one of the Great Lakes. Actually, it is considered a shallow lake. Still, if you stand and watch, you will see huge freighters making their way through the channel (sort of a marked roadway through the water) from Lake St. Clair to the Detroit River to continue their way south.
Please open your textbook to page 15 and read how Michigan's lakes were formed.
Before you read page 15 in your text, did you know the Upper Peninsula had more than 150 waterfalls?
Before trucks and planes were invented to move supplies (lumber, iron ore, etc.) from Michigan, the rivers were the most important means of getting those supplies to other states where they were needed. We will see photos showing the workers in the logging industry up north long ago, as well as how they floated the logs down the rivers. Those men did amazing and dangerous work!
QUESTION: Where are mountains found in Michigan? Can you locate Michigan's mountains on the map on p. 15? --------------------
