Let's round numbers!
Please open your Math textbook to page 46.
When a quesion or problem asks " about how many," it is asking for an estimate and one way to give an estimate is to round a number to the nearest ten, hundred, or thousand.
Let's think about the number 2700.
Q: What two thousands is 2700 between? A: 2000 and 3000
Q: Which thousand is 2700 nearer to? A: 3000
RULE: When the digit in a number's hundreds place is greater than 5, the number rounds up to the next greater thousand.
RULE: When the digit in a number's hundreds place is less than 5, the number rounds down to the lesser thousand.
Hmmm ... Is 2500 closer to 2000 or 3000? A: Neither. it is halfway between.
* Please notice that 3-digit numbers can also be rounded to the nearest ten. *
Please review page 46. When you are comfortable with the rounding process, please advance to 'Your Turn!'
