WELCOME TO MATH!
Today we will Compare and Order Larger Numbers.
Now that we are more comfortable with numbers in the 'Thousands' period, we can compare two larger numbers and determine which is greater and which is less.
As a warmup, let's arrange the digits 1, 4, and 5 to form three numbers greater than 400. Now, please name the greatest and the least.
When we wish to compare numbers, the first step is to compare the numbers in the greatest place. For example, comparing 1450 and 1250, we first look at the thousands place. Since both numbers have 1 thousand, I cannot tell at this point which number is greater. Now I will compare the numbers in the next place - the hundreds. I see there are 4 hundreds in 1450 and 2 hundreds in 1250. Therefore, 1450 is greater than 1250.
Please read the problem at the top of the display on page 44. Again, to compare numbers, look at the greatest place of each number.
NOTE: The same steps are used to compare and order hundred thousands as you use to compare thousands. Work from left to write as you evaluate each number.
YOUR TURN!
Please complete the odd-numbered problems on pages 44 and 45.
