WELCOME TO ENGLISH/WRITING!
Last Friday you began to write your personal narrative.
I had asked that you please write the first paragraph, which introduces the event you are writing about.
►Please take out that first paragraph once more and reread it.
Do the first sentences of your paragraph say something (or ask a question) which will grab the reader's attention? Will it make them curious, and want to read more?
Terrific!
As we talked about last week, a narrative has a BEGINNING, a MIDDLE, and an END.
Now let's move on to the second paragraph, which is part of the MIDDLE :)
►Remember that this story is being told by you about you. Therefore, you will be frequently using words such as I, me, and my.
►Another point to remember is that good writers include interesting details to help audiences involve their senses. In other words, the words you choose to write have the power to allow the reader to imagine what it feels like to be you; what you are seeing, feeling, and hearing.
Your words have the power to make them feel they are in the experience themselves!
Last Wednesday I asked you to write a list of at least three events related to the topic you are describing in your personal narrative. Under each of the events, I had asked that you write details about each event. Please go back and pull out the list of events & details.
Beginning with the first event, please write a paragraph describing the event and including details of the event. For example, if you were writing about a camping trip, one of the first events related to it might be arriving at the campsite and setting up your tent. You might talk about who worked with you in setting it up; whether you had any difficulties getting the tent set up; the exprience of pounding the stakes into the ground, etc.
This first event and its details makes up the 2nd paragragh of your personal narrative.
Congratulations! You're making solid progress!
Please continue to keep all of your personal narrative papers in one place.
Also, remember this is just the first draft in the process of writing a personal narrative, and it is not expected to be perfect. We will make changes and corrections later. Right now we are are doing our best to get our thoughts and first efforts on paper.
